Eagles Basketball Team Advances to Quarterfinals
The energy in Cokely Fieldhouse was electric as the final seconds ran off the clock on February 29. The Liberty North Eagles men’s basketball team continued their impressive season, grinding out a tough win against Savannah in the sectional game at Liberty High School.
The Eagles got off to a slow start as they managed to only score 3 points in the first quarter and found themselves down 12-3. The Eagles did not let themselves get down emotionally though, as they came out in the second quarter and cut the Savage lead to 19-17.
“We knew we didn’t play our game the first half, yet we all came together and knew we could take over the second half,” Junior Zach Starr said.
One problem the Eagles faced in the first half was attempting to contain Savannah player Tyler Peterson, who led the Savages with 24 points. Yet the Eagles knew he would not be able to win the game for them by himself. Peterson scored 13 of Savannah’s 19 first half points and all 11 of the Savages 2nd half points.
Yet on this night team play truly conquered all. The Eagles were able to find scoring for multiple different players. Senior Garrett Loew lead the team with 14 points while Junior Jake Hanson contributed a solid 6 points and Juniors Nadhir Daughtry and Zach Starr, and Sophomore Brinkley Jolly contributed 5 points each. The Eagles were able to pull out a 39-30 victory.
Now the Eagles advance to quarterfinal play where they will face conference rival Grandview on Saturday March 3 at 7:45 at the Independence Event Center.
